What is a tendon injury?

Tendons are the fibres that connect muscle to bone. They are found at near the joints such as the shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle. A tendon injury may happen suddenly, but it is usually the result of many tiny tears to the tendon over a period of time. Symptoms of a tendon injury include pain, stiffness and loss of strength in the affected area. The pain will usually get worse when you use the tendon and the area might be tender, red, warm or swollen if there is inflammation.

Common types of tendon injury include:

Tendinopathy is usually used to describe inflammation of the tendons and the tiny tears in and around the tendon due to overuse. Tendon injuries can occur anywhere in the body. Some areas include:

  • Achilles tendon
  • Elbows
  • Shoulders
  • Knees
  • Fingers and hands
  • Toes, feet and ankles

What are the causes of tendon injuries?

Most tendon injuries are caused by general wear and tear to the tendon due to overuse or ageing. Tendon injuries can happen to anyone but are more likely to occur in people who do the same motions over and over again due to a job, sporting activities or daily tasks that are more likely to cause damage to the tendon.

Our approach

Tendon injuries can be very painful and interrupt day-to-day activities and hobbies. At Flex Health, our aim is to keep you as active as possible and to ensure that your tendon injury doesn’t affect your ability to function and continue life as normal. Following a comprehensive assessment of your injury, one of our dedicated rehabilitators will create a person-specific treatment plan which takes into account your goals for recovery. We will also advise on how you can change the way you may do your activities to avoid the risk of causing further damage and to ensure you are functioning to the best of your ability.

Our team are especially passionate about keeping clients healthy and fit when we embark on a treatment plan, so we will incorporate physical exercise and therapies into your treatment which will strengthen the area we are working on while also keeping you at optimal health. You will be invited to work with us 2-3 times per week, however we can adapt this to your routine.


Is there anything I can do at home to help my recovery?

We would strongly advise discussing physiotherapy exercises and techniques with a qualified rehabilitator prior to trying exercises at home. While we will prescribe some active therapies to do in your spare time, it is always best to consult a professional as you could make your injury worse and cause more pain.
