Spinal Infection

Flex Health is one of Hull and East Yorkshire’s leading health and physiotherapy providers

What is Spinal Infection?

Spinal infections are rare and can occur post-operatively or spontaneously. The bones, the invertebral discs, the dural sac or the space around the spinal cord can all become infected, with infections caused by bacteria or fungal organisms. The infection may start elsewhere in the body and spread to the spinal cord via the bloodstream.

Symptoms of a spinal infection include fever, headache, stiff neck, pain, wound redness and wound drainage. Surgery can sometimes be necessary for advanced infections and for those caused by an operation, as the bacteria and infected tissue may need to be removed. The infection can cause relentless pain and muscle spasms in the spine which can lead to a curvature known as scoliosis or torticollis.

 Causes

Spinal infections are caused by bacterial or fungal organisms which can occur spontaneously or post-surgery to the region. Certain factors make a person more likely to develop a spinal infection. This includes people with HIV, certain cancers, the Herpes virus and Enteroviruses such as polio. Bacterial abscesses caused by Staph Infections are a common cause of spinal infections, as are fungal infections such as Aspergillus.

The infection can cause numbness, and tingling and weakness in the arms and legs. A sufferer may also have misalignment of the spine and back pain or instability.

Treatment

Spinal infections can sometimes be treated with medication however it is common for a patient to require surgery to treat the condition. Pain management is also key, with a focus on reducing movement to begin with in order to help the patient feel more comfortable. Physiotherapy can help people recovering from spinal infections to maintain their mobility and muscle mass.
