What is neck pain?
Neck pain is a common issue which is often felt as a general discomfort in the neck area and stiffness in the neck muscles. The pain can radiate down to the shoulder or between the shoulder blades and sometimes even the arms and hands. It can start progressively- caused by poor posture or sitting for too long- or be brought on by a sudden impact such as road traffic collision.
Most people will suffer from one or more episodes during their lives and in many cases, it will get better without intervention. However, for lots of people, neck pain can be so painful that it affects their day-to-day functioning.
Common types of neck pain include:
- Neck strain
- Head or neck trauma
- A herniated disc
- Degenerative disc disease
- Pinched nerve
- Cervical spondylosis
What are the causes of neck pain?
Neck pain can manifest itself in a number of ways and with our lives becoming more sedentary, neck problems are becoming far more common. Any abnormalities, inflammation or injury can cause neck pain or stiffness which can develop into a reoccurring problem.
There are three classifications of neck pain:
Axial neck pain: Axial pain is musculoskeletal, and the source of this pain originates from the neck muscles, ligaments and/or joints. This can be caused by trauma or poor posture.
Radiculopathy: Cervical radiculopathy refers to neck and arm pain due to nerve root compression. This often results in not only pain, but weakness, numbness and difficulty controlling specific muscles.
Myelopathy: Myelopathy refers to pressure on the spinal cord, also referred to spinal cord compression. This can be severe and may result from trauma, congenital stenosis, degenerative disease, or disc herniation.
How do you treat neck pain?
At Flex Health, we will use a combination of acupuncture, manual therapy (massage) and active therapies. The aim will be to not only manage and ultimately reduce pain, but to improve your strength and flexibility.
Our qualified team of rehabilitators will meet with you for an initial assessment where we will try to determine the cause of your neck pain. A rehabilitation plan will then be devised whereby we will ease stiffness and pain, build muscle strength and stamina and also look at improving your flexibility and general fitness. By focusing on these core aims, we hope to eliminate the possibility of repeated issues.
Is there anything I can do at home to help my recovery?
We would strongly advise discussing physiotherapy exercises and techniques with a qualified rehabilitator prior to trying exercises at home. While we will prescribe some active therapies to do in your spare time, it is always best to consult a professional as you could make your injury worse and cause more pain.
