What is a ligament injury?

Ligament injuries are common- particularly in athletes- and can occur at any joint in the body. They can occur as a sprain or tear and are most common in the knee or ankle. A ligament injury will normally happen when a person falls, twists or is hit in a way which forces the body out of its normal position. The signs of an injured ligament include pain, inflammation and at times bruising around the injured area. Depending on the ‘grade’ of injury, the pain may be mild, moderate or severe.

Common types of ligament injury include:

  • ACL injury
  • PCL injury
  • MCL injury
  • LCL injury
  • Posterolateral corner injury
  • Posterolateral corner injury
  • Whiplash
  • Sprained ankle
  • High ankle sprain
  • AC joint injury
  • Dislocated shoulder
  • Thumb or finger sprain
  • Neck sprain
  • Back ligament sprain
  • Superior tibiofibular joint sprain

What are the causes of ligament injuries?

You are most likely to have a ligament injury when playing sports or exercising, however you can also suffer a sprain from walking or running in day to day life. Stepping off a step and rolling your ankle may cause a ligament in your ankle to sprain. You can also suffer a ligament injury due to an impact such as in a road traffic accident.

Types of ligament injuries

There are several types of ligament injuries, and these are usually defined by a ‘grade’ of severity. These grades are defined in this way:

Grade I: stretching of the ligament or a mild tear, with little or no instability at the joint.

Grade II: a more serious but incomplete tear with looseness in the joint.

Grade III: a completely torn or ruptured ligament. This will feel similar to a broken bone and the patient will usually be unable to put weight on the joint or affected limb.

How do you treat ligament injuries?

At Flex Health, we will do a full assessment of your injury, where we will determine the best treatment to increase function of the injured area and also reduce the risk of further injury. Our person-centred approach to rehabilitation will mean that you will receive a personalised plan which will work on strengthening the injured area, easing stiffness and pain, and eliminating the possibility of repeat issues. We understand that following a ligament injury, you will want to be back to fighting fit as quickly as possible and our consistent approach to rehabilitation ensures that you are able to get back on your feet as quickly as possible. Our team of highly experienced rehabilitators will use a combination of manual and physical therapy to treat the area and may use some acupuncture if required.


How often will I have to attend physio?

This is totally up to you! We recommend having physio 2-3 times per week in order to speed up the treatment process, however if this doesn’t fit into your schedule then we can meet with you just once per week.

Is there anything I can do at home to help my recovery?

We would strongly advise discussing physiotherapy exercises and techniques with a qualified rehabilitator prior to trying exercises at home. While we will prescribe some active therapies to do in your spare time, it is always best to consult a professional as you could make your injury worse and cause more pain.
