Functional Neurological Disorder

Flex Health is one of Hull and East Yorkshire’s leading health and physiotherapy providers

What is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)?

Functional Neurological is the name for a number of neurological symptoms with no identifiable cause. FND is characterised by a series of symptoms such as blackouts, functional limb weakness, tremors, dystonia, pain, sleep disorder and many more. The symptoms may appear similar to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s or MS, but they are not caused by a structural disease of the nervous system. Instead, the individual will suffer with the actual ‘functioning’ of the nervous system itself.

Causes

The exact cause of Functional Neurological Disorder is not exactly known, although it is thought that stress and depression can be factors. However, it is known for people to develop FND without stress or depression being a factor in their lives. There are a number of factors which possibly increase the risk of someone developing Functional Neurological Disorder. These factors include: dissociative disorders; personality disorders; distressing life events; childhood traumas; and having a family member with FND.

Treatment

The aim of FND treatment is to train the brain to ‘unlearn’ abnormal and dysfunctional movement patterns that have developed. Patients will often be offered multidisciplinary treatment options which involve physiotherapy, psychiatry, occupational health and anything that is relevant to their symptoms. Treatment should take a holistic approach as a patient’s symptoms will be unique to them.
