Functional Electrical
Stimulation (FES)

What is Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)?

Offering you the opportunity to achieve full recovery potential, FES is a well-established rehabilitation technique that currently helps improve the lives of many people with neurological impairments or critical illness.

FES uses pulses of electrical current to stimulate peripheral nerves, activating weakened muscles and encouraging muscle activity within the trunk, upper and lower limbs. The FES allows patients to perform functional movement patterns with co-ordinated muscle activation, allowing the individual to maintain their health and combat the secondary health complications of immobility.

Key benefits

• Increased muscle strength and bulk
• Maintenance of muscle length and joint mobility
• Relaxation of muscle spasms
• Increased local blood circulation
• Improved bladder and bowel function
• Improved mood and well-being
• Improved range of motion
• Reduced risk of pressure sores

How can it help you?

Functional Electrical Stimulation can be useful to patients who have muscular weakness caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord. The Flex Health FES cycle targets the leg muscles, however the benefits do not stop there. The cycling motion helps to stimulate the back, stomach and arms muscles which can improve posture and relax muscle spasms.

By enjoying FES cycling as a leisure activity, you will be able to maintain your health and fitness whilst training at optimum function. Functional Electrical Stimulation is also proven to improve mood and overall well-being in patients that regularly commit to this rehabilitation activity.

How does it work?

Applying small electrical charges to a muscle that has become paralyzed or weakened, the FES helps to stimulate the muscle to make its usual movement. Our Neuro-Physio will place sticky pads onto your skin and the electrical current will be transferred to the muscles that are being targeted. When this is combined with a power-assisted static bike, coordinated muscle contractions can be attained that are capable of producing pedal strokes sufficient to perform a cycling movement.

Can FES help me?

To find out if FES is the right treatment for you, we would recommend you book an appointment with one of our fully qualified Neurological Rehabilitators to do an assessment and see if FES is a suitable option.

FES cycling may be offered to you as part of a treatment plan which combines multiple therapies, or we may find that there are better options to support your rehabilitation.

What conditions can be treated using Functional Electrical Stimulation?

A wide range of conditions can be treated and supported using FES. These include:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Spinal Cord Injuries and Infections
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Stroke
  • Transverse Myelitis
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Undiagnosed Neurological Conditions
  • Discogenic patients
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Huntingdon’s Disease
  • Patients with reduced muscular strength and function
